It will set the bar now for others to follow. Good work!
Please share this comment with others....

I own a successful dive center in the United Sates. I have brought a group of 18 divers to Palau twice in the last five years. We travel all over the world every year, and are always looking for NEW destinations to keep our clients happy. I will now book our next trip BACK to Palau as a direct result of this action! Other p[otential destinations will lose our business and you will recieve it because of your commitmet to the environmen and the creatues we love. We know this will further protect your ecology, and if others do not follow, Palau may retain the most pristine reef systems in the world because of this protection!
Thank you for your efforts, we look forward o seeing you in your waters next year!

Best Wishes
JTAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04774264701870069279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2519803072986235280.post-3248348618507294802009-09-24T22:14:38.467-07:002009-09-24T22:14:38.467-07:00Excellent news!

Having traveled the world making documentary films and studying the water system of the planet, we have seen many examples of how mismanagement of marine resources has imposed hardship on local people. Overfishing is one of the most destructive of human activities that affect coral reefs. It is well known that large predators have a top down effect as they keep populations of prey in check and as they stabilize critical ecological processes.

Fishers generally seek the largest of fish and it is these large fish that are not only most important as predators but they are also the ones with the greatest reproductive potential. Thus it is these large fish that are the individuals that will be most effective in restoring depleted populations. This applies to both sharks and bony fish.

Regarding shark finning, this is one of the most wasteful and inhumane of all fishing activities. Cutting off the fins of a living fish and then abandoning it to sink to the bottom of the sea to die of starvation is a barbarian act.

We have seen tourism and incomes drop in places where marine resources have been destroyed for short-term profit. Future generations of Palau citizens deserve that their most valuable natural treasure, healthy marine ecosystems, will be sustainably managed for everyone's benefit.

Because of this Jean-Michel Cousteau, his Ocean Futures Society and its members all urge rational and humanitarian management of Palau's valuable ocean heritage.

Sincerely,

Richard Murphy, Ph.D.
Director, Science and Education
Ocean Futures Society
www.oceanfutures.orgShark Sanctuaryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00108312691161693995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2519803072986235280.post-17552198086311520312009-04-02T10:17:00.000-07:002009-04-02T10:17:00.000-07:00This is a huge mistake. (Senate Bill 8-44 To Amend Title 27 of the Palau National Code to Allow Commercial Fishing of Sharks) 80,000 tourists come to Palue annually to see fish and reefs, including sharks. This bill, if enacted, will have a negative effect on tourism as well as further help destory the already declining shark population worldwide.
Comments on this bill, if any, should be sent to Senator Eledui, The OEK, The Capitol, Palau, PW 96940.
